Tourism in Rhode Island reached an unprecedented high in 2023, with 28 million visitors contributing $5.6 billion to the state’s economy, according to data released by Rhode Island Commerce. This marks a 2% increase in visitor numbers and a 4.6% rise in tourism spending compared to 2022, underscoring the Ocean State’s resilience and growing appeal post-pandemic.

Spending on food, beverages, and short-term rentals drove much of the growth. The food and beverage sector alone accounted for $1.4 billion, a 5.6% increase from 2022, while spending on lodging reached $1.2 billion, reflecting the state’s reputation as a premier travel destination.

Tourism’s Economic Impact

Tourism’s contribution to Rhode Island’s economy in 2023 is a significant $850 million higher than pre-pandemic levels in 2019. Governor Dan McKee lauded this achievement, stating, “This record achievement is proof that Rhode Island is truly ‘All That!’”

The state’s tourism industry also supports 86,000 jobs, making it a vital component of the local economy. Visitors prioritized experiential spending over retail, reflecting a shift in travel preferences toward immersive and unique experiences.

Culinary and Cultural Appeal

Rhode Island’s dynamic food scene continues to draw global attention. In 2024, 10 restaurants and chefs from the state were semifinalists for the prestigious James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards, often referred to as the Oscars of the culinary world. This recognition highlights the state’s diverse and world-class culinary offerings.

In addition to its gastronomic appeal, Rhode Island’s coastal city of Newport remains a hotspot for tourists. Known for its sailing culture, Newport hosts the Newport Jazz Festival, the nation’s first outdoor jazz event, which attracts around 10,000 attendees annually. Anika Kimble-Huntley, Chief Marketing Officer at Rhode Island Commerce, emphasized the importance of tourism in driving the state’s growth. “The economic activity generated from the travel sector represents a critical component of Rhode Island’s current and future development,” she said.
