Tenerife’s stunning 56-mile road trip that has everything from beaches to ancient villages | World | News

Tenerife is known for its sunshine, stunning beaches and volcanic landscapes. But one scenic 56-mile road trip on the island’s north side is somewhat of a must-do for visitors looking to explore everything from ancient villages to wild coastlines. It was highlighted by experts at Tenerife Travel Tips, and it includes some of the most beautiful places on the island.

The route starts in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a historic town that’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Just a short drive from Tenerife North Airport, it’s full of colourful streets, traditional Canarian architecture and buildings that date back to the 16th century. Places like Plaza del Adelantado and the Cathedral are popular stops, and it’s a great place to grab a typical Canarian breakfast before heading into the mountains.

From there, the road leads into the Anaga Rural Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve known for its laurel forests, deep ravines and rugged peaks. 

According to Tenerife On and other local guides, the best place to stop is the Cruz del Carmen Visitor Centre, where you can pick up maps or get advice about hiking trails. 

Even just driving through the park is a highlight, with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and wild mountain scenery.

The next stop is Playa de Benijo, a remote beach that’s popular with photographers and surfers. 

It’s located near the village of Taganana and is known for its black volcanic sand and rock formations that rise straight from the sea.

Experts at Hello Canary Islands say that there aren’t many facilities there, but it’s a great place to stop for a walk or a few photos.

Continuing along the route, you’ll reach Chamorga, a small mountain village tucked into the far northeast corner of the island. 

From there, travellers can take hikes out to Roque Bermejo or the Anaga Lighthouse. 

Honest Tenerife recommends allowing at least two hours if you want to take on the trail, or just stop in the village for a glimpse of traditional life in the Anaga mountains.

After the mountains, the road winds down to Playa de las Teresitas. Located just outside Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the golden-sand beach was created using sand from the Sahara Desert. 

According to some local tourism sites, it’s one of the best beaches on the island for swimming and sunbathing thanks to its calm, shallow waters and good facilities, including food kiosks and toilets.

The final stop is Santa Cruz itself, Tenerife’s capital. Visitors can explore the Auditorio de Tenerife, enjoy the shops around Plaza de España, or grab food at the Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África. 

Travel site Capture the Atlas also recommends the Palmetum, a large botanical garden built on a former landfill.
