Customizing your Character
My Melody is invited to open a gift shop at Big Adventures Park and brings Hello Kitty, her friends, and that includes you, along for the journey. But when the plane is near the island, things don’t go as planned, all due to a malfunctioning strawberry cake maker. The group gets separated, and they find that the once-lively park is now deserted. Except for some strange creatures!
While you are on the plane, you are asked to make your character. There are quite a few options to make the character just as you wish. The number of clothes you can use is very limited, but later on in the game you will unlock quite a few more, and changing clothes is very easy.
Even though you might have spent quite some time customizing your character, you might not be entirely happy when you see yourself moving around. At the back of the plane, there is a standing mirror, and standing before it and pressing A lets you make additional changes.

Later, once you are on the island, you can change your appearance in front of any mirror. So not only can you change your clothing, you can also change the kind of animal you are and your colouring. Aside from that, you can also change your attire based on the items in your backpack.

Guiding Light and Quests
For your first assignment, you have to search for My Melody, and to do this, you get a Guiding Light. It will tell you where you need to go while you are tracking a quest. Every quest has two checkboxes beneath Track Progress, which means the progress of this quest will show on top of the screen. And Show Guide, which means the guiding light shows the way.
From the start, your in-game phone will show a lot of useful things like your Quests. You will see seven different types:
The Island Mystery: These quests are shown with a symbol showing a blue top hat with a question mark. They trigger the main story of the game.
The Right Tools: as the professional would say, “the right tool for the right job”. These quests have to do with unlocking new tools and abilities and have the symbol of a maroon-coloured hammer.
Around The Island: is all about exploring the island, either by collecting or finding specific objects. These quests are shown as two green mountains.
Friendship Quests: As Hello Kitty Island Adventure is heavily based in making friends by giving gifts, Friendship Quests will unlock when you reach a certain friendship level with a character. The quests tied to a character are very specific for them; the symbol for this category is a red heart.

Multiplayer Quests: when you get to where you can do multiplayer, you will find special quests you can do with your (online) friend. I felt that it was a very nice addition. Not only can you visit each other’s islands, but you will also have things to do together. The symbol for this category is a blue icon with two human figures.
Daily Quests: these are miscellaneous quests that reset daily at midnight in Colorado, US time – check your local difference to Mountain Standard time or Mountain Daylight time. The symbol is a purple calendar with an exclamation mark.
Weekly Quests: These are miscellaneous quests that reset at midnight (Colorado, US) every week on Monday. The symbol is a brown calendar.

Important Message from Sunblink
Also, on your in-game phone, but something you might miss at first is the developers’ Sunblink Post. It is, however, an important one to read. Not only do you get some nice in-game items, but they also stress that time travel will break the game. You might know it from Animal Crossing, where time travel brings on a serious case of bed hair and cockroaches. In Hello Kitty Island Adventure, the effect is severe, though.
You will lose access to multiplayer and time-based functionality (daily items spawning, flowers growing and events progressing) will not work retroactively. And they can do nothing to restore a save file once it is in this state. So beware!
It made me wonder: remember how time travel in Animal Crossing had an unfortunate effect if you were playing Disney Dreamlight Valley on the same Switch console? In that case, when you launched Dreamlight Valley, that game was frustrating too, for the entire period that you had time travelled in Animal Crossing. I don’t know about you, but I’m not gonna try it out!

Loads of Things to Find
There are plenty of (hidden) things to find around the different locations of the island. The treasure chests are dotted around, containing craft materials or potential gifts. You will also find clothes, decorations, crafting plans, and recipes.
A lot of websites highlight gift-giving and tell you that the things you find are excellent because of that. Indeed, gift-giving progresses the game and raises friendship levels, making sure you are right on track to get that one thing you need, like a fishing rod or a snorkel.
But our statement here is also that finding things that are as common as sticks or sand dollars can lead to good things. You might need them to fulfil a quest, craft an item, or exchange them in the shops for the item you want.
So pick up everything and anything in Hello Kitty Island Adventure. You will see things where the outline shines when you walk past, these are the things to pick up or interact with.
Aside from the fruit, flowers, sticks, balls of rubber and so on, you might even get game tickets that can be used to play minigames all across the map or various comics to add to your collection.

Giving Gifts
Somehow, I’m used to giving gifts while I strike up a conversation with the requester once I have the required item. Not in Hello Kitty Island Adventure. You can only give something by pressing X while you are in front of a character.
You can give three gifts daily, and it’s important to make the most out of this if you want to progress the game. The game will give you tips on what kind of items someone likes and show if you have something suitable in your inventory. It doesn’t have to be big; a piece of fruit will do just as well.

By leveling up the friendship with Hello Kitty you will unlock the oven in her café. There is some flour daily on the shelf next to the appliance and at first you will find that you can create new bakes with the pieces of fruit you have found. Everything you make leads to a recipe which eventually will lead to more cooking methods.
Once you have baked something like a strawberry shortcake, it’s a good idea to test if there are villagers who would love a nice strawberry shortcake as a gift.

The Map And Time
The Map
On the Nintendo Switch, you press ‘-‘ to pull up the map in Hello Kitty Island Adventure, a nice and very detailed one. It’s not just a way to see where you are and where the other characters are, but you can also see the Locations list with Y, where you will see all the locations that you have unlocked the mailbox (aka fast travel point) for. And go directly from where you need to go.

If the map is too busy for you, you can also use Map Filters. You can toggle for Characters, Gifts, Flower Patches, Cooking/Crafting and Cabins.
Time in the Game
It can be a bit confusing that the daily and weekly quests reset at real-world timeslots and for example, the Nul with the collection hat resets in real time 24 hours too. Meanwhile, there are 4 in-game time periods in Hello Kitty Island Adventure, lasting in total about a real-world hour. When you get your own cabin and bed, you can alter the in-game time of day as needed for quests or specific fish and critters.

Tooling is Important
You can only progress the main story when you have the right tools. This is the way to get the tools. They can be accessed on your tool circle that pops up on the Switch by pressing down on the D-pad, and they are not visible in your inventory.
One of the first items you get is a Camera. When your friendship reaches level 1 with Pochacco, the Gudetama Snap quest is unlocked. To make sure you can take a picture of every Gudetama you find, you get a camera.

You have to make a Crystal Sensor to find enough Power Crystals in the Power Up the Gate quest You have to reach friendship level 1 with Chococat in order to unlock the quest and to get a blueprint to make a Crystal Sensor. To make the Crystal Sensor, you need sticks and three magnets, and you can get these in turn by having a level 2 friendship with Badtz-maru, Tuxedosam and Pochacco.
To navigate the waters, you need Flippers, which by the way are equipped constantly. You get this crafting plan by finishing the Power Up the Gate quest and be at friendship level 1 with Keroppi.
Fishing is unlocked when Badtz-maru is at friendship level 3 (not too difficult to achieve). Once you’ve made a rod, he will explain how to fish, by keeping the white arrow as close to the centre of the bar as possible. Fish can be gifted or traded and with over 40 types, there are plenty to catch.

There are plenty of critters to catch around the islands for which you need a Net. Just befriend Keroppi and unlock the Nature Preserve to start collecting them.
The Snorkel is one I coveted a lot. With it, you can access the underwater and underwater reefs! The Snorkel can be crafted by completing the Deep Diving quest when you have friendship level 6 with Kuromi.
The Pickaxe allows you to break boulders so that you can access different locations on the island. This one doesn’t pop up in your tool circle. Instead, it’s automatically there when you approach a rock you can break. The pickaxe can be crafted while completing the Revive the Oasis quest that you get from Keroppi when you get to speak to him at the Oasis (in the Gemstone Mountain area) and you get your crafting plan from Chococat.
With the Watering Can, you can water Gift Flowers and Flowers. You have to reach friendship level 14 with My Melody, complete the Crystal Vay-Cay quest, and then you will unlock the Flower Power quest, leading to the Watering Can Plan from My Melody. This one doesn’t show in the tool circle either but automatically appears when you approach something that needs to be watered.
The Bubble Wand allows you to catch Critters underwater in Rainbow Reef. It is unlocked during the Magic Bubble Wand quest, which occurs after you have completed the Comic Relief quest, the Enraging Ruins quest, the Deep Diving Quest, the Finding Flippers quest, the Open the Nature Preserve quest and Bring Back the Swing quest. So quite a ways to go to get it.. It can be equipped in the tool circle.
With the Trowel, you can dig up and replant flowers at different locations on the island. The Trowel can be crafted while completing the Dig It Up quest and is available in the tool circle.
The Cloudlight is used to disperse Dark Water. During the The Mystery Tree quest series, you get the Cloudlight Plan from Chococat. It appears automatically when needed and isn’t available in the tool circle.

Multiplayer Possibilities in Hello Kitty Island Adventure
Hello Kitty Island Adventure has good multiplayer possibilities. It’s very easy to achieve, and you can do more than just follow each other around. You can even play together cross-platform.

Just open your in-game phone and select the purple Multiplayer app icon. You will see two options, to Invite a Friend and Join a Friend. You have a 7-character code that is your invite code outside the game to a friend, but when you both play on the Switch, there’s an easier way. Just press Invite Friend, and you see your friend list in your Switch. You do, of course, have to know that they have the game, but if they do, you can invite them through their Switch profile. They will see the invite pop-up on your profile page.
When you are the one who is visiting, you press Join Friend, paste in the 7-character code your friend has given you and hit Ok. Click “Yes” to leave your current world and enter your friend’s. After a loading screen, you should appear on your friend’s island! When a Switch friend invites you, you can enter their game by clicking the invite they sent on your profile page.
If it doesn’t work, then either you’ve entered an invalid code, have an unstable internet connection, or the versions of the game aren’t the same. I just now tried multiplayer with Paula (me on the Switch, and she was on the Steam Deck), and we didn’t get anywhere as the Steam version already had an update, while the Switch one hadn’t. Just to be safe, leave the multiplayer menu open while waiting for your friend, too.
There is also a limit of one guest on your island at a time, so it’s a two-player co-op-only situation. To host a friend in multiplayer, you need to complete the Friends From Afar quest from Keroppi, which comes after the Power Up The Gates and Open the Nature Preserve quests.

You will notice that, when you are hosting, your Invite friend button will turn into a Kick Player button, so there you have the way to end the session. Hello Kitty Island Adventure lets you do a lot of things together while visiting. There are specific quests to do together, you can give each other a gift and raise your friendship levels. Items your friend picks up go home with them, so be aware of that!
New players can see things in the friends game that might be spoiling things a bit, on the other hand, you can be in awe of what is yet to come for you!

Making Coffee
Can’t wait to unlock coffee making? It might happen earlier than you think, once you have found Hangyodon in the Comedy Club. Go to the left in his club, where you see a Null behind the bar. Go behind the bar and see that you can use the coffee maker there with Y. You can now make coffee using the Candlenut Hangyodon gives you in return for gifts, and add ingredients to it. You don’t need to add two ingredients, one is enough to get some nice coffee. Like Cappuccino by adding Coral Milk, Chai by adding Magma Bloom, Purple Latte by adding Spinip and Sweet Latte by adding Candy Cloud. Have fun experimenting!
