Canada issues travel advisories for these warm-weather tourist destinations

As a polar vortex brings a blast of cold weather to Ontario, many people may be thinking of travelling to a hot destination.

Southern Ontario is bracing for numbingly cold temperatures and possibly another snowstorm this weekend. If there was ever a time to getaway, this might be it.

But before booking a trip, it’s a good idea to check out the latest travel advisories.

Canada’s Travel Advice and Advisories website page helps travellers make informed decisions and travel safely outside the country.

They analyze trends and incidents affecting international travellers, monitor global events and collect updated reports from various sources.

Here are five warm-weather destinations with travel advisories:

Egypt

Risk: Ongoing tensions in the region, the unpredictable security situation and the threat of terrorism.

Reasons: Due to the ongoing events in Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, the security situation in neighbouring Sinai could deteriorate suddenly. Local authorities could impose movement restrictions on short notice. Tensions can flare up suddenly in the Middle East and lead to travel disruptions, including flight cancellations and airspace closures.

The security situation in Egypt is unpredictable, and certain regions of the country, North Sinai, Western Desert, for example, are particularly volatile and should be avoided.

There is a significant risk of terrorist attacks throughout the country. Attacks can be indiscriminate and occur with no warning, including in Cairo. While attacks in the North Sinai are frequent and mainly target security forces, terrorists have also targeted popular tourist destinations, places of worship, and other places frequented by foreigners throughout Egypt.

Brazil

Risks: High crime rates and regular incidents of gang-related and other violence in urban areas.

Reasons: Crime rates are high throughout the country. Tourists are mostly affected by theft, but incidents of violent crime also occur.

Robberies occur regularly and often involve weapons such as guns and knives. Thieves generally target people who appear wealthy, such as those using cell phones and laptops.

Criminals sometimes attempt to rob you by pretending to sell you something or by offering to help if you appear lost. If you’re lost, go into a nearby business or hotel to ask for directions.

Victims have been seriously injured or killed when resisting perpetrators who were armed or under the influence of drugs.

Cambodia

Risks: Increase in petty crime.

Reasons: Petty crime, such as phone and bag snatching, occurs frequently. Thieves, sometimes on motorcycles, grab bags and other valuables, including passports. Theft targeting foreigners is frequent on sidewalks, on motorcycles and tuk-tuks.

Personal belongings have been stolen from locked rooms, particularly in low-cost accommodations. Items have been removed from luggage stored in the luggage compartments of buses, especially on the journey between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

The advisory suggests travellers ensure their belongings, including passports and travel documents, are secure at all times and do not leave belongings unattended. If you are robbed, hand over cash, electronic devices and valuables without resistance.

Avoid all travel to the area within 50 kilometres of the Cambodia-Thailand border due to ongoing tensions in the region.

Madagascar

Risks: High crime rate and the potential for political instability.

Reasons: On Oct. 14, 2025, following large-scale demonstrations, the military took over and announced a two-year transition period with an interim President, followed by a new election.

Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, is common throughout the country. Be particularly vigilant in areas frequented by tourists in Antananarivo.

There are reports of violent crime across all regions of Madagascar. Armed gangs are known to commit home invasions, carjackings, robberies, and kidnappings. Foreigners have been targeted in urban areas as well as in rural and isolated areas. Theft from vehicles occurs frequently. Thieves target cars stuck in traffic for smash-and-grab robberies.

Italy

Risks: Threat of terrorism.

Reasons: There is a threat of terrorism in Europe. Terrorists have carried out attacks in several European cities and further attacks elsewhere in Europe are likely. Attacks in Italy cannot be ruled out.

The Milan Cortina Olympic Winter Games will take place in northern Italy from Feb. 6-22, followed by the Paralympic Winter Games from March 6-15, 2026.

Travellers heading to the games should remain aware of their surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Thieves and pickpockets take advantage of large gatherings to target travellers. People may approach tourists on the street to sell tickets to events. People should only purchase event tickets through the official Milan Cortina 2026 website or reputable resale services.

The 112 European Emergency Phone Number system provides service in multiple languages, including in English. You can download the “Where are U” application to your smartphone. This application can connect you to the 112 Public Safety Answering Point and will automatically transmit your GPS location. While the ‘Where Are U’ service is unavailable in certain parts of Italy, including in Veneto, you can dial 112 for emergencies throughout Italy.
