Planning a beach day trip? Before you go, there are a few things to keep in mind. Traveling mid-week can help avoid weekend travel rush, arriving in the morning almost always guarantees the best spot to sunbath and daytime is the safest time to swim.

Here’s a list of some fun in the sun locations you may want to consider visiting. With help from Google maps, travel times to beaches outside Monroe County can range from 25 minutes to over an hour. So, be sure to pack snacks and your favorite playlist for the car ride. Oh, and don’t forget the sunscreen!

Monroe County

City of Luna Pier Public Beach and Pier, Luna Pier Road — The City of Luna Pier Public Beach and Pier offers a public beach, bath house and pier amenities, charter fishing, marinas, bike paths and walking lanes.

Sterling State Park, 2800 State Park Road in Monroe —This state park on Lake Erie offers a sandy one-mile beach with campgrounds, full-amenity cottages, a boating-access site and trails along with opportunities for fishing.

Outside Monroe County

Estimated travel time: 25 minutes via 1-75 S

Carland Beach, 3808 146th St. in Toledo, OH — The beach has public restrooms but no facilities for showers, rental equipment or picnic areas.

Estimated travel time: 38 minutes via I-75 S

Maumee Bay State Park, 1400 State Park in Oregon, OH — The park offers two beaches on the Lake Erie shore and along the park’s inland lake. Between the two beaches there are restrooms and outdoor showers. Swimming is permitted in designated areas. Pets are not permitted on swimming beaches.

Estimated travel time: 51 minutes via I-275 N

Lakeshore Park Beach, 617 S. Lake Dr. in Novi — The beach is open Memorial Day through Labor Day. There is a restroom and picnic tables. Dogs are not allowed on the beach, but they are allowed in the rest of the park as long as they are on 6-foot leashes.

Belle Isle Beach, 2 Inselruhe Ave. in Detroit — The beach has a designated swimming area open daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day. There are kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals.

Martindale Beach and Maple Beach at Kensington Metropark, 4570 Huron River Parkway in Milford — Beaches are open Memorial Day through Labor Day. Swimming permitted 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Life jackets are encouraged. There are no life guards on duty.

Estimated travel time: 1 hour 7 minutes via I-75 N and 1-94 E

Lake St. Clair Metropark, 31300 Metro Parkway in Harrison Twp. — Open May 1 – Oct. 1, the 600-foot-long sandy beach stretches along Lake St. Clair. A bathhouse is located at the pool complex with changing rooms, heated showers and coin operated lockers. An all-terrain beach wheelchair (on land) and a floating beach wheelchair (in water) are available at no charge. Life jackets are encouraged. There are no life guards on duty.

Port Clinton City Beach, 1100 Perry St. in Port Clinton, OH — A swimming beach located across the street from Lakeview Park with playground, restrooms, picnic tables and charcoal grills. Dogs are permitted but must be leashed.
