‘A stranger said I was ruining her trip to the beach – she ended up embarrassed’
The woman soon realised her mistake
A family attempting to enjoy a peaceful day at the seaside found themselves being rudely insulted to their faces. However, the local resident soon found herself embarrassed after realising she’d made a big mistake.
Posting on Reddit, the user said: “I’m visiting my in-laws in another European country and we went to the beach. It was not busy at all, so we chose a spot and set up our beach mat.” Everything appeared to be going well, with their four-year-old beginning to play and explore. Yet, matters took an awkward twist when another person arrived.
The post went on: “About 20 minutes in, a woman sets up super close to us, about two metres away. It is weird because the beach is very empty but whatever, we don’t own the space. Some time after that, she’s sighing loudly and staring at us. She takes a call and starts complaining about us.”
The Reddit user alleges the woman started telling someone about their child being “too loud” and getting “too close to her”. The local woman spoke in her mother tongue, presuming the family were oblivious, and carried on telling their mate on the phone about the “rude foreigners” that were “ruining the place” and also branded the child a “brat”, reports the Daily Star.
However, the family could understand every word. Instead of confronting the woman about her harsh words, the Reddit user retaliated subtly by switching their language of communication.
They added to their post: “We speak English to each other, but we know the local language. She’s looking at us with shock and then goes sullen. After some time, she moves further along the beach. No idea why she chose to put herself in that situation, I guess some people enjoy having a reason to complain.”
Reddit users found the entire scenario amusing and shared their views on the “entitled” woman who some believed was “looking to be offended”. One user commented: “She clearly wanted to pick a fight or feel morally superior, and it backfired when you understood everything. It’s wild how some people intentionally put themselves in uncomfortable situations just so they can complain.”
Another penned: “Karen’s are everywhere – bet the look on her face was priceless when she knew you could understand her!” A third remarked: “Some people are only happy if they’ve got a problem. They love to complain!”.
Yet another stated: “There is no such thing as ‘looking like’ you may or may not speak a particular language or be native to it. There are so many different situations, especially these days, when families are more mixed, travel and study abroad are more accessible. If you aren’t comfortable having your words understood by literally anyone within hearing range, chances are good you should not be saying them at all!” Another person responded: “Completely agree!”
A fifth individual shared a similar experience: “The amount of times this has happened to me, as an Asian-Brit in Asia. It is always a shock to the people who think you don’t understand what they’re talking about-I mean, how rude is it to talk badly about the person that you’re literally right next to, expecting them to not speak their language?”
