Canada issues travel advisories for these tropical beach destinations

As the weather cools, many Canadians consider a tropical beach holiday.

While Ontario residents experienced summer-like temperatures last weekend, it seems like fall is now moving in.

Those looking to escape the cold weather may consider a trip to a tropical country this winter. But before making plans, it is a good idea to check out the latest travel advisories.

Canada’s Travel Advice and Advisories website page helps travellers make informed decisions and travel safely outside the country.

They analyze trends and incidents affecting international travellers, monitor world events and collect updated reports from different sources.

Here are five tropical countries with travel advisories:

Cuba

Risks: Oropouche virus and hepatitis A.

Reasons: There are outbreaks of Oropouche virus disease happening in the Americas. While this virus has been found in the region before, there are now more cases than usual, and some areas are seeing cases for the first time. Some countries have reported travel-related cases, with most reported in people coming back from Cuba.

The disease is spread to humans by the bite of an infected small fly called a midge (sometimes called no-see-ums) or possibly some types of mosquitos. Most people recover from the disease without long-term problems. However, in rare cases, it can lead to serious illness. There is no vaccine to prevent the illness.

Pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant should discuss the possible risks of travelling to areas with Oropouche virus with their health care provider.

There have been reported cases of hepatitis A in return travellers from Cuba. Hepatitis A is a liver disease, most commonly spread when someone eats food or drinks water that contains the virus. The best way to prevent hepatitis A is to get vaccinated. The advisory suggests travellers discuss the benefits of getting vaccinated with a health care provider before travelling.

Indonesia

Risks: Political and social tensions, and threat of terrorism.

Reasons: Significant demonstrations have been occurring in Jakarta since Aug. 25, 2025. Violent incidents have occurred. Police have responded with tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds.

Climate change is affecting Indonesia. Extreme and unusual weather events are becoming more frequent and may affect your travel plans. Indonesia is located in a very active seismic zone and is prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, flooding, volcanic eruptions and drought.

A tsunami alert was in effect for North Sulawesi and Indonesian Papua this week, but has since lifted.

Philippines

Risks: Crime, terrorism and kidnapping.

Reasons: In recent years, the Filipino government has intensified its fight against terrorists. Counterterrorism operations diminished the capacity of terrorist groups to operate in the Philippines. However, militants remain in the country even if attacks are less common.

Climate change is affecting the Philippines. Extreme and unusual weather events are becoming more frequent.

On Sept. 30, 2025, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Bogo, Cebu.

A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck offshore from the province of Davao Oriental, in southern Philippines, on Friday. Officials warned of strong aftershocks, and there were warnings for a tsunami for the Philippines and Indonesia, but they have since been lifted.

Honduras

Risks: Crime.

Reasons: Although the overall situation has slightly improved since 2022, violent crime remains a concern throughout Honduras. The country retains one of the highest homicide rates in the world.

Drug trafficking, transnational organized crime and street gang activity are prevalent in certain neighbourhoods. Violent incidents are frequent.

Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and bag snatching, occurs. Thefts commonly occur in popular tourist areas, bus terminals and airports, shopping malls and hotel lobbies, and restaurants, including patios.

Local authorities periodically declare a state of emergency in various municipalities to fight against gang-related crime and extortion.

While a state of emergency is in effect, security forces have increased rights to restrict freedom of movement, conduct searches, make seizures and detain persons of interest.

Mexico

Risks: High levels of criminal activity and kidnapping.

Reasons: In recent weeks, there have been violent clashes between rival armed groups in Culiacán, Mazatlán and their surrounding areas. Armed groups have stopped vehicles on the highway from Culiácan to Mazatlán and on other major roads.

Levels of crime, particularly violent crime, are high throughout Mexico. Mexican authorities have made efforts to protect major tourist destinations, resulting in lower levels of gang-related violence in these areas. However, incidents of violent crime still occur in major cities, popular tourist areas and resorts. Fighting between criminal gangs and cartels has taken place in restaurants, hotels and nightclubs.

If you’re a victim of a crime, you must report it immediately to local authorities. Criminal investigations require that a formal complaint be made in person. You should hire a local lawyer to represent your interests and follow up on your case after you return to Canada. Failure to do so may result in incomplete investigations or long delays in bringing cases to trial.
