Will Trump come to Palm Beach Oct. 24-27? What we know about Asia trip

  • Palm Beach residents will get a break from road closures as President Trump travels to Asia.
  • Trump is scheduled to attend a summit in Malaysia before visiting Japan and South Korea.
  • Democrats have urged the president to cancel his trip to address the ongoing government shutdown.
  • Security has been increased around Mar-a-Lago, including new traffic signals and flight restrictions.

Palm Beach residents are slated to have a reprieve from the closure of South Ocean Boulevard this weekend as President Donald Trump heads to Asia for a multiday trip.

When Trump comes to the island to spend time at his Mar-a-Lago home, the Secret Service closes South Ocean between the Southern Boulevard traffic circle and South County Road. The shutdown effectively cuts Palm Beach in half and adds to the town’s already difficult traffic situation, frustrating motorists.

But Trump is not expected to return to Mar-a-Lago until possibly sometime in November, as his trip to Asia — the first of his second term in the White House — extends into at least Nov. 1.

Here’s what to know about Palm Beach’s road closures, security at Mar-a-Lago and the president’s upcoming visit across the Pacific.

When will Trump leave the U.S. to go to Asia?

Trump has said that he will attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in Malaysia, which is Oct. 26-28, according to PBS News.

The president then will travel to Japan, followed by South Korea.

It’s also expected that Trump will meet during his trip with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The Trump administration has been working toward a trade deal with China, and Trump expressed optimism this week that he will reach a “fantastic” deal with the country.

What have Democrats said about Trump’s trip to Asia?

Some Democrats have called on Trump to cancel his planned trip to Asia and remain in the United States to work toward ending the government shutdown that began Oct. 1.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Trump’s plans for international travel during the shutdown were “outrageous.”

When does the Mar-a-Lago Club open for the season?

The Mar-a-Lago Club traditionally opens for Palm Beach’s social season with a Halloween party.

When did Trump most recently visit Mar-a-Lago?

The president arrived the evening of Oct. 17 for a weekend stay at his Palm Beach home, where he was scheduled to speak at a $1 million-per-plate fundraiser for the super PAC MAGA Inc. that night.

During his trip, Trump visited his Trump International Golf Club in suburban West Palm Beach. He left aboard Air Force One to return to Washington, D.C., in the evening on Oct. 19.

During Trump’s visit, a stretch of Southern Boulevard on the south side of Palm Beach International Airport was closed for roughly 24 hours from Oct. 18-19 as the Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the discovery of a hunting platform in a wooded area that had a line of sight to where Air Force One parks.

The structure was dismantled, and as of Oct. 23, investigators have not released further information about the platform’s origins.

What does security look like around Mar-a-Lago?

Law enforcement officials have tightened security around Mar-a-Lago ahead of the expected uptick in visits from Trump as he begins to travel to Palm Beach more during the season.

The Secret Service, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and Palm Beach Police Department conducted training at Mar-a-Lago on Oct. 14-15. The Secret Service and Florida Department of Transportation also placed traffic signals on the eastbound and westbound lanes of Southern Boulevard at the south entrance to Mar-a-Lago, a move officials said would help protect vehicles and pedestrians moving between a security screening lot south of the club and Trump’s 17.5-acre estate.

Residents on Palm Beach’s North End could hear more noise from airplanes after the Federal Aviation Administration implemented a new set of temporary flight restrictions that are in effect for a mile around Mar-a-Lago, even when Trump is not home.

Mar-a-Lago is also set to have a new, larger helipad for Marine One landings. Palm Beach’s Landmarks Preservation Commission approved those plans on Oct. 22.
