Trump returns for second presidential trip to Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach

  • On President Trump’s schedule for this weekend: Dinner with Republican senators, a Fox News interview and a trip to the Super Bowl.
  • While President Trump is home, South Ocean Boulevard between South County Road and the Southern Boulevard traffic circle will be closed.

President Donald Trump arrived at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach on Friday evening ahead of busy weekend that will be capped by a history-making trip to the Super Bowl.

Air Force One touched down just before 6 p.m. Friday at Palm Beach International Airport, and Trump waved to supporters before climbing into a black SUV for the short motorcade trip to Mar-a-Lago. This marks his second trip to Palm Beach since his Jan. 20 swearing-in.

Once at Mar-a-Lago, Trump was slated to host a private dinner for Republican senators who are in town for the National Republican Senatorial Committee’s winter meeting, ABC News reported Tuesday.

Trump’s schedule for the rest of the weekend has not been released by the White House, but NBC News confirmed earlier this week that Trump will attend the Super Bowl in New Orleans, Louisiana, making him the first sitting president to do so.

He typically attends the Super Bowl party at his Trump International Golf Club in suburban West Palm Beach, which is where he spent each of the four Super Bowls during his first term in office.

Also this weekend, Fox News chief political anchor Bret Baier will interview Trump at Mar-a-Lago, Fox News announced Monday. Part of that interview will air during the Super Bowl pregame show at 3 p.m. Sunday. More from the sit-down with Trump will air during Baier’s “Special Report” series on Fox News on Feb. 10, the network said. The network airing the Super Bowl traditionally also airs an interview with the sitting president.

Trump most recently was in Palm Beach from Jan. 31 to Feb. 2, for his first trip to Mar-a-Lago since taking office.

South Ocean closed for the weekend

Trump’s arrival on Friday evening was preceded by the closure of South Ocean Boulevard in Palm Beach earlier in the day.

The town announced the closure in an alert sent Thursday morning. The road will be closed between South County Road and the Southern Boulevard traffic circle until further notice, Palm Beach said.

However, with Trump slated to return to the White House after the Super Bowl, the road should reopen within the hours after his anticipated departure Sunday afternoon from Palm Beach International.

South Ocean Boulevard next to Mar-a-Lago first closed July 20 as part of increased security measures ordered by the U.S. Secret Service following the July 13 assassination attempt on Trump.

Officials initially said the road would be closed 24 hours a day through at least the Nov. 5 election, but the town, Secret Service, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and Mar-a-Lago Club on Aug. 19 announced they reached an agreement to open the road when Trump is not home.

That agreement remains in place, and the road closes when Trump is at Mar-a-Lago, then lifts when he leaves for a long enough period of time that it makes logistical sense to remove and replace the concrete barricades, traffic cones and electronic signs that go along with the closure, law enforcement sources have told the Daily News.

When Trump returns, bridge schedules also are adjusted as part of temporary security zones announced late last year by the U.S. Coast Guard around Mar-a-Lago.

When Trump is home the Flagler Memorial and Southern Boulevard bridges have similar opening schedules:

  • Monday through Friday: From 7:30 to 9 a.m., the bridge will open on the quarter-hour; from 9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., the bridge will open on the quarter and three-quarter hour; from 2:15 to 6 p.m., the bridge will open on the quarter-hour; and from 6 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., the bridge will open on the quarter and three-quarter hour.
  • Saturday, Sunday and federal holidays: The bridge will open on the quarter- and three-quarter hour.

The Southern Boulevard Bridge also may close without notice to allow for motorcades to pass uninterrupted, the Coast Guard said. Because the bridge-opening times are staggered, the Royal Park Bridge’s schedule when Trump is in town is different from the schedule for the other two bridges:

  • Monday through Friday: From 7:30 to 9 a.m., the bridge will open on the half-hour; from 9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., the bridge will open on the hour and half-hour; from 2:15 to 6 p.m., the bridge will open on the half-hour; and from 6 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., the bridge will open on the hour and half-hour.
  • Saturday, Sunday and federal holidays: The bridge will open on the hour and half-hour.
