Ohio college spring break travelers take note: US issues travel warnings

As college students get set for spring break activities, the U.S. has issued travel warnings for those planning to travel to popular tourist destinations outside the country, including Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Italy and Japan.

Will the travel advisories impact your travel? Here’s what to know.

Mexico, Bahamas, other popular spots hit with travel advisories

The U.S. Embassy and Consulates warn spring break travelers to be careful of surroundings and exercise caution against scammers or dangerous areas while in foreign countries.

For destinations like Mexico, the U.S. warns of crime, drug possession, guns, and other advisories to stay safe. Other spots include Turks and Caicos, The Bahamas, and several more areas that the U.S. lists on its travel advisories, according to the Desert Sun.

The State Department issues four levels of travel advisory:

  • Level 1 (exercise normal precautions).
  • Level 2 (exercise increased caution).
  • Level 3 (reconsider travel).
  • Level 4 (do not travel).

Since the start of the year, there have been more than 20 locations added to the international list; Afghanistan, Syria, and South Sudan are among the countries labeled at Level 4, which carries the highest risk to safety, according to the State Department. “No one should travel to Level 4 areas for spring break or any other reason,” the agency warns.

When do Ohio’s colleges go on spring break in 2025?

Some schools, such as Ohio State, have already dismissed classes for spring break. Most spring break schedules take place during March. See the full list of Ohio colleges here.
